Removing a photo from a gallery sounds like one action. In a Shopify store it is at least three, and they do different things: taking an item out of a gallery, deleting the whole gallery, and deleting the file itself in Content > Files. People mix them up in both directions, either deleting a file to tidy a gallery and losing it from a product page, or removing gallery items for months expecting storage to go down. This guide explains exactly what Snug Gallery deletes in each case, what it deliberately leaves alone, and what the storefront shows when a file disappears underneath a gallery.
How a gallery item relates to a file
A gallery in Snug is an ordered list of items, and each item is a small record that points at a file in your Shopify Files library and carries the gallery-specific details: alt text, caption, tags, link, hotspots, position. The file is the pixels; the item is the pixels plus what this gallery says about them. One file can be pointed at by several items in several galleries, and by a product page, and by a theme section, all at the same time. The guide on Shopify Files versus app-hosted images explains why Snug works this way rather than storing copies on its own servers.
Once you hold that picture, the three actions make sense. Removing an item deletes the pointer. Deleting a gallery deletes the list and all its pointers. Deleting a file deletes the pixels, and every pointer anywhere in the store is left pointing at nothing.
Removing an item from a gallery
Select an item in the gallery editor and choose Remove. The app rewrites the gallery's item list without that entry and then deletes the item record itself, so its alt text, caption, tags and hotspots go with it. The toast says Image removed and the grid closes the gap; items after it move up one position.
The file is not touched. It stays in Shopify Files with the same name and the same URL, any product or theme section using it keeps working, and it still shows up in the import page's Files tab, now selectable again rather than marked Already in gallery. If you remove an item by mistake, add the file back from the Files tab as described in the guide on reusing product photos and Shopify Files; you will need to retype the caption and alt text, because those lived on the deleted item.
Storage is the thing people expect to change here and it does not. Removing items frees nothing, because the files are still there. If the goal is to reclaim space, the file has to go too, which is the third action below.
Deleting a whole gallery
Delete gallery is a separate button with a confirmation. The dialog spells out the consequences: the gallery and its N entries will be removed, the files stay in your Shopify Files library, and any theme blocks pointing at this gallery will show nothing. All three parts are literal. The app deletes every item record first, then the gallery record, and never issues a file deletion.
The theme side deserves a second look. A gallery block in your theme is configured with a gallery, and after the deletion that configuration points at something that no longer exists. The block renders empty rather than showing an error, so a deleted gallery on a live page becomes a blank space without a message. Before deleting a gallery that has been live for a while, check which templates used it and either swap in another gallery or remove the block.
If you are deleting a gallery to replace it with a fresh one, consider clearing it instead: remove the items, keep the gallery, and the theme block stays connected. Rebuilding the block settings is usually more work than removing twenty items.
Deleting the file in Shopify Files
Content > Files in the admin is where files are actually deleted, and it is the only place a gallery image can really disappear. Shopify deletes the file for the whole store; it does not know or care that a gallery pointed at it. The same happens indirectly when you delete a product, because a product's media are files too, which is why the import guide suggests uploading a photo to Files separately if you plan to retire the product but keep the picture.
On the storefront the effect is quiet. When the gallery block renders, it reads each item's file and skips any item whose file has no image to show. A deleted file produces no broken-image icon and no gap, just one fewer tile, and the counter in the lightbox counts the remaining items. The same skip handles videos that are still processing, so the rule is simply: no preview, no tile.
In the gallery editor the item is still there, because the pointer still exists, but it has no preview. The tile shows File missing in place of the thumbnail, and the details panel explains that the file was deleted from Content > Files. Use Upload a replacement on it to point it at a different file while keeping its caption, alt text, tags and position, or remove the item. A tile that says Processing instead is a different case: Shopify has not finished processing that file yet, and the preview appears on its own once it is ready.
The two cases where the app does delete a file
For completeness, there are two situations in which Snug itself removes a file from your library, and both involve files the app created moments earlier rather than files you uploaded.
The first is adding a YouTube or Vimeo video to a gallery that is already at its plan limit. The app fetches the video's thumbnail and stores it as the poster before trying to add the item; if the add is refused because the gallery is full, the poster it just created is deleted again so you are not left with an orphan. The second is the customer photo queue: when a submission is rejected or deleted and its file was never published to a gallery, the uploaded file is deleted from Files, as the guide on the moderation queue describes. Files that were published stay, because by then they are gallery images like any other.
Everything else is leave-alone. Failed adds roll back the item records they created, never files. Uninstalling the app removes nothing from Files. The intent is that nothing you uploaded can vanish because of something you did inside the app; only the Files page and product deletion can do that.
A quick decision table
Want the image out of this gallery but nowhere else: remove the item. Want this gallery gone: delete the gallery, after checking which theme blocks used it. Want the file gone from the store and the storage back: delete it in Content > Files, knowing every gallery item, product and theme section using it loses the picture at once, and tidy up the now-empty items in the editor afterwards.
If you are unsure whether a file is used elsewhere, the Files page shows references for images used by products and themes, and the import page's Already in gallery marker tells you whether a given file is in the gallery you have open. Neither gives a full map across all galleries, so when in doubt, remove the item and leave the file; it costs you a little storage and saves you a missing photo on a page you forgot about.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing an image from a Snug gallery delete it from Shopify Files?
No. Removing an item deletes only the gallery entry, including its caption, alt text, tags and hotspots. The file stays in Shopify Files with the same URL, keeps working wherever else it is used, and can be added back to the gallery from the Files tab.
I deleted a file in Content > Files that a gallery used. What do shoppers see?
One tile fewer. The storefront block skips any item whose file has no image, without a broken-image icon or a gap. In the gallery editor the item remains, marked File missing instead of a thumbnail; upload a replacement file for it or remove it.
Why does my storage not go down after removing gallery images?
Because the files are still in Shopify Files. Gallery items are references, not copies, so removing them frees nothing. To reclaim space, delete the files themselves in Content > Files, after checking they are not used by a product page or another gallery.
What happens to a theme block when I delete its gallery?
It renders empty. The block keeps pointing at the deleted gallery and shows nothing, with no error message. Before deleting a gallery that is live, change the block to another gallery or remove the block from the template.
